Cuauhtémoc Ortega receives Special Recognition as a 2026 California Public Defenders Association Awardee

We are proud to congratulate Cuauhtémoc Ortega, who joins our firm as a partner on June 1, 2026, on receiving Special Recognition from the California Public Defenders Association as one of its 2026 Awardees.

CPDA’s 2026 awards honor “Champions of Indigent Defense” — leaders whose courage, dedication, and commitment uphold the constitutional promise of equal justice for all. The Special Recognition award honors extraordinary contributions to the defender community, including leadership in particular fields and service that may not fit within annual award categories.

Cuauhtémoc’s recognition reflects exactly that kind of extraordinary contribution. In the words of the CPDA:

“As Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California, the largest federal public defender’s office in the nation, you have led with courage, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to your clients and the Constitution.

When the government targeted protesters and immigrants with the full weight of federal prosecution, you stepped forward personally, securing an acquittal and exposing official misconduct on the national stage. Your cross-examination of a senior federal official laid bare the dehumanizing rhetoric at the heart of an unjust enforcement apparatus and sent ripples through courtrooms across the country.

You have reminded us all that the defense of individual rights is never more important than when the government’s power is at its most formidable. You are a defender of the public in the truest and most essential sense of the word.”

We are honored to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and the extraordinary public service it reflects.
