Elizabeth Brannen featured in Publishers Weekly article on new wave of copyright lawsuits against Meta

On Monday, October 19, we and our great co-counsel at Freedman Normand Friedland LLP filed the first of a new wave of individual copyright lawsuits on behalf of around 300 authors, alleging that Meta trained its AI models on pirated copies of their books as well as physical copies it bought and scanned, all without a license.

Partner Elizabeth Brannen spoke with Edward Nawotka from Publishers Weekly about this new front in AI copyright litigation: “Imagine it was for a classroom, and you got one copy of the book and ripped the spine off and copied it and handed it out to everybody. That wouldn’t fly. So why does it fly if you’re training a whole bunch of servers?”

We think the answer is that it doesn’t.

We appreciate the coverage and attention to these important cases and issues.
