Stris & Maher partner Bridget Asay, who is representing nonprofit organizations in litigation supporting Vermont’s first-of-its-kind Climate Superfund Act, was quoted in a recent article in The Boston Globe covering challenges to the law.
The article, titled “As Vermont Defends its Climate Superfund Law, the State Prepares to Bill Big Oil,” explores the state’s attempt to recover billions of dollars from oil and gas companies for the costs of climate change-related damage, as well as the significant legal battles that are expected to follow.
According to the article, attorneys for Vermont and Asay, an attorney for the nonprofits Conservation Law Foundation and Northeast Organic Farming Association, argued that the law is designed to address real and ongoing harms tied to greenhouse gas emissions.
“These climate impacts, like floods and droughts and excessive heat, are risking our agricultural heritage and our local food supply,” Asay said. “And those impacts have continued since 2023, as we’ve seen floods washing out our towns’ infrastructure over and over again.” Click here to read the full article in The Boston Globe (subscription required).
